Hold On To Your Brains...Zombies Make The Ultimate 2012 Women's Costume
BRAAAAAIIINSSSSS....!!!!
There's bloody nurse Betty, or the putrid zombie prom queen. For 'women who are looking for a horror-film inspired take on the sexy women's zombie costume, they can get excited because zombie costumes are a hit this year.... if not the costume hit.
You know what they say... cannibals are just wannabe zombies who can't make the commitment.
Maybe that's true, but what's also true is that this year, if you are looking for a great concept, you can't go wrong with the zombie costume. One reason it is so popular is because it's versatile... you can make it sexy, scary, or downright hilarious.
Our cutural obession with the great army of the undead isn't a passing fancy. According to the 24/7Wallst.com, all-things-zombie were worth about $5 billion to the U.S. economy in 2011, and 2012 isn't looking much different. Last summer, we saw evidence of a real-life zombie apocalypse...there were dozens of zombie-like attacks in the news, men biting people's cheeks, people coming back from the dead, and there was even a kid's book about a zombie who fell in love. There's even a slew of zombie inspired games, and one of the most popular apps is the Zombies vs. Plants game (Yes, I'm addicted, too.).
In an ideal world, we wouldn't have to resort to killing each other like in the movie the Crazies, or (awesome flick!) Shaun of the Dead, but on Halloween, there's really no harm in going all-out with a zombie inspired brain-eating contest. Whatever you decide to dress up as, or how you go about coming up with the perfect shade of undead lipstick is really up to you. There's one thing that I'm certain of, at least. When the zombie apocalypse commences, I know I'll survive, and probably have to save your fanny, too. Now, where did I leave my chainsaw....

Other Fun Halloween Facts:
- Halloween Candy sold in the U.S.= Roughly 598 billion pounds or $1,900,000,000,000.
- Americans spend about $6 billion a year on Halloween
- Some very old Halloween traditions were only about getting young women married off. According to History.com, "Many of these obsolete rituals focused on the future instead of the past and the living instead of the dead. In particular, many had to do with helping young women identify their future husbands and reassuring them that they would someday—with luck, by next Halloween—be married. In 18th-century Ireland, a matchmaking cook might bury a ring in her mashed potatoes on Halloween night, hoping to bring true love to the diner who found it."
- In the movie Psycho, the substance used to simulate blood was actually chocolate syrup.

Historic Haunted Places in the United States
Even though it’s still a very young country, relatively speaking (236 years old versus France’s approximate 1400 years), America has had some extremely fascinating history. For our short history, we seem to have more haunted places than most other countries. It’s probably because as Americans, we liked to be scared. Don’t ask me why, because I’m honestly not like that, but in general, Americans will do anything for a thrill.
That’s why those paranormal shows on the Travel Channel and Sci-Fi are so popular. Well, if you're looking for a real thrill this Halloween, you should check out some of these historically important haunted places, and it might be fun to go in costume, look for great men's or women's costumes. Maybe you’ll get a paranormal encounter yourself.
It is said that the most haunted part of the ship is the engine room where guests often hear pipes banging and lights flickering on and off. The pool is also widely recognized as haunted, as a young girl fell off the slide and broke her neck and is said to be walking around the pool, looking for her mother. The RMS Queen Mary was known as the Grey Ghost during World War II and was involved in carrying British and American Troops back and forth between the two allied countries, crucial during the war. Stay the night. See what happens.
there are tons of women's costumes should you want to dress up as the queen.
Alcatraz Prison, just off San Francisco Bay. Known as “The Rock” and functioning as a federal prison from 1933 to 1963, Alcatraz is most famously known for holding Al Capone for about four years. Some of the most notorious criminals were held here. One story tells of an inmate who got placed in cell 14D, where inmates were sent for bad behavior. Through the night, he yelled about a monster with glowing eyes that was going to kill him. In the morning, he was found strangled. The next day, a guard claimed to have seen that same inmate after counting an extra prisoner during the headcount. The utility corridor has been claimed as the most haunted place in the prison. A night watchman has constantly heard noises coming from the corridor.
Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, Los Angeles, California. If you love Old Hollywood stars, then stay a night in room 928 at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel. Room 928 has had numerous supposed sightings; visitors will often feel pats on their shoulders, cold spots around the room and some have even heard a trumpeting noise. This could be because room 928 was home to film star Montgomery Clift while he was filming “From Here to Eternity”, in which he played an army trumpeter. Cabana Suite 229 was host to Marilyn Monroe for a while and numerous claims have been made regarding the famous actress, whether it be that her spirit resides in the mirror in the room or that she has been dancing or posing in the Blossom Ballroom. However, the most paranormally active room seems to be Cabana Suite 213. While no celebrity has been linked to this room, claims have been made that the TV turns on and off randomly, the coffee maker makes strange sounds and the sink turns on and off without provocation. Supposedly, the presences of Marilyn Monroe, Montgomery Clift, Humphrey Bogart, Carmen Miranda, Betty Grable and Edward Arnold have been noted in this hotel.
Gettysburg Battlefield, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. The lives of nearly 50,000 soldiers were taken at this battlefield during one of the bloodiest battles in Civil War history. While “haunted” isn’t necessarily the most correct word to describe it because no substantiated claims have been made, it’s been said that many people have seen apparitions that seem to appear out of nowhere and walk around with no regard to the living there. With 50,000 souls lost on that ground, I’d be surprised if there WEREN’T ghosts roaming about.
Of course, I could go on all day about the historically haunted places that the United States has to offer. There are so many that span all across the country that you can probably find one in your area. Or if you’re too chicken to try visiting any of these places, the Travel Channel has a great paranormal show that will make you a little nervous to go to bed at night.

Zombies Are IT!
While costumes like Monster High and Angry Birds are very trendy this year, zombies beat them all. Movies are bringing them out, video games are bringing them to life, people even dress up as zombies and get married! So, naturally, Halloween is the place where they belong. You can dress up as they do, bleed from the mouth all day long and fit right in with the rest of society.
When dressing the part of a zombie, you need to decide on the theme you would like to portray. There are several different types of the walking dead, you have those “newly infected” with just a few lesions on the face and/or neck, you have the ones that have been around for a while who are pretty decomposed with teeth showing or eyes missing, and you have those who are almost unrecognizable as humans, the damage is so bad. But choosing how you want to look will determine how you proceed with the rest of your costume. We will say you are doing the “newly infected” look. This seems to be the more popular and simplest form.
Finding your clothing is easy. Buy a ready made costume or just mess up an old outfit. It depends on the look you want. But generally, zombies are regular people who have been infected with some sort of bug that alters them into a flesh eating freak and thus passes the sickness to others. So they were just normal people, maybe going to the office one morning, maybe driving a taxi during their shift at work, maybe going out in their bathrobe to get the morning paper. Perhaps you want a historical flair...it is your zombie.
Now you know what to wear, for makeup you can buy a foundation that is the shade you want the creature’s skin to be. Overall, you need a canvas to work on, this will set it. Avoid pure white paint, it looks mask-ish and very unrealistic. You can utilize prosthetic wounds but don’t overdo it. A sharp black eyeliner makes great veins on the skin and then smudge them out to look like they are faint, underneath. Random scratches, abrasions and bruises will look more authentic and can be accomplished with assorted shades of eyeshadow and lip gloss (watch out for shimmery kinds). And finally, stage blood used all around the mouth and dabbed onto the wounds create depth of this creepy character. NOTE: Stage blood will dry with more of the real blood appearance than just fake blood. Costume shops and those sort of places will carry a more theatrical line of products for a more authentic look.
Mess up your hair, I mean really mess it up. You need to look like you just struggled for your life...and lost, of course. So back comb the heck out of it, rub a balloon on it, whatever it takes.
Don’t worry about being beautiful or sexy, zombies are no such thing. But have fun with it and wow the people at the parties you go to this year!

2005 to Now: How Costumes Have Changed
It’s hard to fathom that 2005 was seven years ago. I only had three grandchildren seven years ago. Now I’m up to thirteen. It’s truly amazing how much can change in less than a decade.
One thing that changes drastically is trends in Halloween costumes. Beside the traditional mummy, vampire and ninja that we throw together when we forget that Halloween is coming, the best-selling costume has never been the same from year to year. We have found a great list at extremehalloween.com that answers the question, “What was popular seven years ago?”
In 2005, the best-selling costume based on a movie was costumes from “Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith”, which premiered in May of that year. This included Darth Vader and a Jedi costumes, and the film beat out Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by nearly 20%. In 2011, according to Newsday.com, the most popular costume based on a movie was Captain America after the movie premiered in July of 2011.
In children’s costumes, in 2011, the most popular costume for boys was Harry Potter, as the last movie of the seven film franchise came out that summer. I can’t blame them. It was definitely the end of an era when that last film premiered. In 2005, the most popular boys costume, according to extremehalloween.com was something more traditional, such as a monster or devil, beating out Spiderman by about 4 percent. The most popular costume for girls in 2011 was a princess (probably a Disney princess), which is no surprise as 2011 continued to ride the wave of Tangled-mania that swept the nation.
In 2005, the most popular costume for both men and women was something more traditional; in the women’s case, something like a witch and in the men’s case, a devil or pumpkin (a pumpkin men, really?). However, in 2011 the most popular mens costume was Captain America and the most popular womens costume was a sexy queen bee.
Times have certainly changed. 2005 seems like a million years ago. Just as fashion will always be shifting, costumes will always be changing. I look forward to seeing what differences seven more years makes on our Halloween themes, and on my grandkid tally!

Trending Now: Patriotic Holiday Wear for Independence Day
In terms of holiday trends, one of the more exciting happenings is the increase in costume attire for season's outside of Halloween. With American Independence Day just weeks away and since its a presidential election year, many people will want new ways to share their patriotic pride.
The political climate of the American cultural landscape means that more and more Americans have a vested interested in their party affiliation and with that comes some fun opportunities to dress accordingly. If you have children, this July 4th there are flag themed sunglasses, and stars and stripes adorn just about every kind of clothing. If you are throwing a barbecue, you could even go all out for the day with a complete patriotic costume.
But, Independence Day isn't the only reason to share your patriotic passion. There are the Olympics coming up, memorial and veterans holidays, and other remembrance days that folks are using to call for a little extra lady liberty-infused style. Just look at how many of the people dressed up in flag-style apparel for a recent Mitt Romney presidential rally.
Some people would argue that wearing clothes that mimic the American flag is inappropriate or unpatriotic. It all boils down to personal preference, with some Americans calling for an end to use of the flag for holidays and others enjoying the extra use of red, white and blue for holiday outfits. Whatever your opinion on the subject is, it's clear that there are more and more people selecting patriotic clothing, costumes and accessories for American festivities.

The Leading Men of Batman
Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer George Clooney and Christian Bale. One of my girlfriends refers to them as these fantastic looking actors as the man-gods. But, there's something about those Batman masks.... anyway, I can't decide which of them wore it best. Personally, I'd be happier than a kid in a chicken suit if I were able to meet any of these hotties, but that's beside the point.
What do you think? Who made the best Batman?

You Know What They Say About Men in Uniform
Actually, I don't know what they say. But I do know that this year is going to be a good one for costumes for men. I do know that men's costumes for the coming holiday season have a lot of movie tie ins, character references and political figures in the mix, so it looks like it's shaping up to be an exciting costume season for the men out there... at least the one who have a burning desire to run around in tights.
With movies like "The Avengers" and every other super hero film out there catering to the 12-year-old teenage male, men who want to get in touch with their inner-comic-book nerd should be happy about the offerings this season. There are the classic heroes: Superman, Batman and Spiderman to consider, as well as He-Man, Iron Man and The Hulk.
If superheroes aren't your thing, there are a truckload of renaissance men, historical figures and outfits from recent 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s decades to delight any guy who wants to boogie down on Halloween night.
Don't forget to check out the pirate section and other period costumes. I honestly wouldn't complain if there were a hoard of men running around dressed up as Captain Jack Sparrow. At all.
I don't drink very often, but for those of you who do like to sling back a rum and coke, there are drinking inspired costumes galore. Why isn't there a superhero for drinking, I wonder? Oh wait...there is. Will Smith played that guy in the movie "Hancock." At any rate, any guy who wants to get into the fun of Halloween should easily be able to find the perfect costume this fall. Pirates, alcoholic superheroes and men in tights... how will they ever decide what to go as? I'm almost wishing I could go as a man this year....wait, hmmm...... there's an idea.

Costumes to Watch For
"Years ago, I created a mighty lie:
an almost demonic creature of violence and vengeance;
a night-beast whose very presence would strike fear into the criminal heart.
But the lie was born to serve the greater good.
The lie protected the innocent,
the forsaken.
The lie serves justice."
-Batman: Absolution
With the new movie, "The Dark Knight Rises" coming to theaters this summer, it's a safe bet that Halloween this year will be filled with plenty of movie tie-ins for costumes. As the streets of your town slowly grow to resemble the black, corruption of Gotham this fall, take a cue from the dark knight himself when you are out trying to score yourself a sweet Batman costume.
I get child just thinking about the all of the comic book/movie inspired outfits that would be perfect for a night out on the town. You can read up on the movie right here.
Like his cave-dwelling counterparts, Batman is an elusive character that borders the realm between good and evil, right and wrong, despair and joy.
With his shades-of-grey internal character, Batman is a complex, richly drawn dark hero that makes for the perfect Halloween alter-ego. Happy costume selecting. If you go with the Dark Knight, you'll be sure to have a remarkable evening.

Costumes of Yesteryear
Retro swimsuits for men are a fun way to get Halloween started.
Brush aside the cobwebs, and pull out some old photo albums because drawing ideas from the past is a great place to start when thinking of Halloween costumes. There are southern bells, religious figures, Egyptian priests and warlords. Every culture and geographic location in human history can be plumbed for its Halloween inspiration.
Back when I was a kid.... sorry, couldn't resist. When it comes to nostalgia, thinking about the bygone era can be a great way to get your creative juices flowing for coming up with ideas for Halloween costumes. For instance, I came across the most amusing idea for a Halloween costume from browsing through some photos with friends.
You see, last summer, one of my best friends showed me a photo of her mom dressed up in a homemade vintage swimming suit for women… you know, the ones that used to come complete with those silly muffin swimming hats? It turns out that she had made the costume so that she would feel comfortable going to the beach with her family… circa summer 2011. I grant you, it was the perfect concept for a person looking for plus-size costumes and she may have had all of her skin covered, but something tells me that she didn’t exactly blend in.
With so many options to choose from, if you only selected costumes from the past you might never be at a loss for a costume idea again. Not to mention, you’re almost sure to show up at that swanky devil’s night party with an original costume idea, and there’s nothing better than that!
With a cast of characters from medieval England, Ming dynasty China or the roaring American 20s, for Halloween, retro costumes are a great source of fun and entertainment.

Favorite Family Costumes for 2012
One of the best things about Halloween is getting together as a family and going out with the kids to go trick-or-treating or to the neighborhood block party. If that is in the plans for your family this year, why not consider dressing up your whole clan as a theme?
I attended one of those "Boo at the Zoo" type events a few years ago, and I saw and entire family dressed up as facets of a complete theme. The mom was dressed as "Little Bo Peep" her kids were the students, and the toddler was the "lost sheep." It was such a clever idea and it also helped the mom keep track of her (kids) sheep at such a crowded venue. That family was onto something, since this year, family costume themes are a huge trend in the Halloween market. There are countless ideas for a family to dress up together... storybook characters, movie characters, bands or political figures.
If you are a movie buff, you could try finding your way around on All Hallows Eve while dressed as a Wizard of Oz-inspired family consisting of mom as the wicked witch, dad as an evil flying monkey and the kids as, what else for a group of trick-or-treaters...the lolli-pop kids? Or you could have everyone in the family go as one of Tim Burton's characters? There are many Halloween costumes for couples that would work perfectly for that theme.
The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Sweeny Todd and Mrs. Lovett, or Edward Scissorhands and Kim, or go as the couple from the Corpse Bride. A daughter could go as Coraline and a son could masquerade as a young Willy Wonka. The point is to pick a theme that celebrates the spirit of your family and the fun of dressing up together… what could be a better way to ring in the best holiday of the year?

Costumes For All
It used to be a hassle to try and find Halloween costumes that fit right. Everyone has that time in their life where suddenly nothing seems to fit the way it used to. I remember, as a young girl of 16, thinking that I’d never find clothes I could wear again. And this pain was only magnified during Halloween, my favorite holiday, as I struggle to find a costume that could possibly fit.
Luckily, in the last decade or so, plus-size costumes have become more and more available. As we as a society address the simple fact that there are many different sized women, clothes become more and more realistic. No more is it toothpick or nothing. This trend has been reflected in Halloween costumes. Now, not only is it possible to find plus-size costumes, I’ve seen costumes specifically geared for only plus sized women.
I, for one, think this is great. It is important to recognize and celebrate the differences we all have. It’s what helps make us the unique and exciting people we are. And frankly, costumes are much more fun when they fit and don’t make us feel self-conscious. After all, the whole point of Halloween is to be able to break out of your shell and have a wild time!
Everyone should be allowed to celebrate and enjoy Halloween. Everyone should be able to wear any costume, and dress as elaborately as they’d like. Thankfully, costumes vendors today are realizing this and producing a greater variety of costumes. Halloween is a magical time of year, and should be enjoyed by all.

Toddler Trends for Girls Costumes
Little girls love to dress up. Whether your toddler is a tomboy or not, there are certain occasions that every child loves to dress up for. Birthdays, Christmas, and of course, Halloween. My favorite trend of this year is the dramatic resurgence of the tutu. I’ve written about the tutu on other blogs, but the sheer amount of tutu based costumes is definitely a trend worth noting.
Here are some classic kids costumes that incorporate a tutu into the design:
If you can think of a costume for a little girl, you can probably search Pinterest and find a tutu version. These easy to make costume additions will definitely be around for at least another Halloween, but you might want to start incorporating it soon before we all move onto something else fun and exciting.

Here are some classic kids costumes that incorporate a tutu into the design:
- Snow White’s iconic dress has been retrofitted to incorporate a bright red, fluffy tutu. Leaving all of the original designs in tact the red tutu makes it age appropriate for 2 & 3 year olds.
- Sleeping Beauty has never looked this adorable. Baby blue tutu, long blonde hair, and a tiny tiara.
- The Queen of Hearts from Alice in Wonderland gets her day in the sun with a red and white tutu covered in hearts.
- Tinkerbell has always had a notoriously short skirt. This year, making that skirt into a pouffy tutu means that you can fit matching green shorts underneath much easier than before.
- Lady bugs - Black and red polka dotted tutus are not for shy little girls. These princess like skirts will make your daughter feel like the center of the party. If you think a young girl should wear as many dots and stripes before they come of age, then this is the right costume for you.

Furry Hats are Fun!
Whether you like to dress up for Halloween or not, you’ve probably noticed that there are a lot of furry hats appearing everywhere. Right now furry hats are incredibly popular among teens and young adults, but I can’t help it. I laugh any time I see someone seriously wearing one in public. They’re ridiculous for every day wear.
Here are what I think furry hats should be used for: woodland costumes, of course. If you are looking for the perfect accessory to pull off looking like a fox, bear, panda bear, wild beast or furry creature from Star Wars, this is the perfect costume piece.
And what could be better than finding these hats in discount stores? No longer do you have to wait for them to be marked down, they’ve completely saturated the market. Some even have long furry ear warmers that can be used as a scarf. If your child wants to dress up as a stuffed animal, this is the way to go.
I feel like I’m preaching to the choir. This is the trend of the moment my friends, seize the opportunity to be wild.

Here Comes the Spiderman
Have you ever wanted to do what a spider can? Do you want to spin a web of any size, or catch thieves just like flies? Well look out, here come Spiderman costumes! Okay, so I know that spiders themselves can’t catch thieves, but if you dress like Spiderman, you can catch the hearts of fellow partygoers. Just like the way you spin your web, go on and spin your fables about that time you defeated Dr. Octopus in the New York City subway, or that time you showed Venom who was boss. The new Spiderman movie is just around the corner, so you know it’s going to be that tight red and blue outfit will be a hot fad again this year, and I don’t know about you, but I never like missing out on the hot Halloween fads. And girls, you don’t just have to play Mary Jane to your man (though I wouldn’t mind looking as pretty as Kirsten Dunst). There are spidergirl outfits galore for all the ladies who think slinging webs has far too long been just a man’s game. So guys and gals, if you got that itch to be a superhero this Halloween, there’s no better option than sweet Peter Parker, or Petra Parker for the ladies. Or if you REALLY do have that itch to be a superhero, who knows? Maybe you were bitten by a radioactive spider and will be swinging from building to building before the end of the day. Hey, we can all dream, can’t we?

Vamp It Up This Halloween
Honestly, is there anything more “in” than vampires right now? Everything from the “Twilight” series to “Let Me In” to the television show “True Blood” seems to suggest that sucking blood is in again! So if you’re like me and you don’t like missing out on the current trends, put on a cape and sharpen those fangs this Halloween! Vampires are one of the great Halloween traditions, like Frankenstein. Why not be the best vampire you could possibly be with vampire costumes? Nothing scares more than the famed creatures of the night. You won’t be allowed to feast on the blood of fellow partiers (obviously), but you will be the feast of the fest showing up as one. And hey boys, if you’ve been working out and show up like Edward or Jacob from “Twilight,” I guarantee you will get a little bit more attention from us girls! So get out of that coffin, party until that sun comes out, savor your drinks (again, hopefully not blood), and have some fun this Halloween. This is the time of year to be a little silly or a little scary, and being a vampire is the best of both worlds. You may even find your Bella of the ball, if you know what I mean. But if you want to save finding love for Valentine’s and want to just scare away, be my guest. Just one more note of advice: If they’re offering any garlic at the snacks table for whatever party you are at, stay far, far away!

Vintage Lace & Tulle
At Halloween it is easy to get caught up in the macabre. Black, red, gothic, vampire, ghost, devil, goblin or ghoul. But sometimes, that’s not the look you want. Sometimes, you want to be as dainty as a china doll or as elegant as Grace Kelly. Sometimes, you want to be a touch girly.
Today I want to talk about the types of vintage lace and tulle dresses and accessories that can help achieve this youthful look. Enjoy!
Today I want to talk about the types of vintage lace and tulle dresses and accessories that can help achieve this youthful look. Enjoy!
- A well fitted 1950s prom dress will be wide at the shoulders, narrow at the waist with a full skirt complete with tulle underskirt. The trick to wearing these dresses well is making sure that you have your exact measurements when you go to try them on. I think added matching lace at the waist band creates a symmetrical look while also slimming your midsection.
- A Victorian skirt is well-fitted, and has a peplum at the back. It’s important to make sure that the skirt starts well above your navel so that it can properly form around your hips to give you an authentic look.
- Lace gloves come in many styles and shapes. While I prefer black Victorian kid gloves, others prefer leather kid gloves from the 30s or 40s. Whatever you decide is the perfect accessory, make sure that it coordinates with the rest of your costume. There is nothing worse than having gloves that clash. Remember, everything should work together, even if that means wearing something less dramatic.
- Lace shawls can be difficult to make, but if you have access to a sewing machine it’s definitely worth the effort. Try different styles, long sleeved, short sleeve and no sleeves. It’s fun to see how dramatically it can change the look of your costume.
- Lace hats. Lace hats are not as popular as they once were, but they look fabulous with the right outfit. Try finding a 1920s cloche hat made of lace, or better yet something worn to the Kentucky Derby. If you do find something authentic, why not try putting together something inspired by My Fair Lady? Star Wars Costumes
When it comes to costumes, trends come and go all the time. As a rabid fan of costumes, I keep pretty close watch on what is trendy at any given time. One trend that has held pretty constant as a theme for costumes over time is Star Wars costumes.
I remember these movies being a big hit when I was young and they were also a big deal for my children as they grew up as well with the second trilogy that came out. One of the big appeals of these movies is that they offer something for fans of all ages to enjoy.
I guess that is why they make great costumes as well, because the whole family can dress up as their favorite character. The series also offers characters of all shapes and sizes so you can dress up the whole family as a character that suits their size and age.
Another great aspect of these costumes is that each character usually has a few variations of costumes that they wear, which adds to variety and allows you to stand out a bit from others dressed as the same character. Another great thing about the Star Wars series is that they are always coming out with new content, and this just makes more opportunities for more costumes.
Such a great and beloved series with so many different and popular characters makes it a perfect fit to base costumes off of and I personally love to see the new ones that they come out with each year.

Easter Costumes 2012
While I mostly get excited about costumes for Halloween, I can’t ignore this impending holiday called Easter. A great time for family and friends to get together to break bread and play games outdoors. It’s also a great time to dress the kids up for a great family picture or reenact the Easter story at church. If you don’t feel like dressing up like biblical characters though, you can go for traditional victorian rabbit costumes, though these may be too scary for young children.
Regardless of how you celebrate Easter, it is a good time for family and friends to celebrate springtime. Here’s a quick and easy way to celebrate:
This Easter, dress your kids up like little Easter bunnies and take pictures in public gardens around your town. My hometown has a lovely rose garden and while it’s not in bloom this time of year, it is the perfect backdrop for cute kids photos.
If you happen to live nearby a tulip or daffodil farm, that would also be a fantastic location for a photo-shoot. Just make sure you and your husband are ready to join in the fun with rabbit ears or easter baskets.

Baby Costume Trends
Like most parents you probably don’t want to dress up your child for more than special occasions like Halloween and Easter, or for their birthday. When you do it’s hard to know if you are dressing them up as something unique or wildly popular for that particular year. That’s why following costume trends can be so important. You don’t want your child to blend in with the rest of those adorable trick or treaters, do you?
Here are the past years most popular costumes for infants. Know that if you like one of these ideas there are countless ways you can individualize it for your little boy or girl:
Here are the past years most popular costumes for infants. Know that if you like one of these ideas there are countless ways you can individualize it for your little boy or girl:
- Baby dinosaur - This costume can be fun to make or find, and little tykes always look cute in it. The colors can range from purple and green to orange and red. Puffy spikes or long tail. This is a versatile costume.
- Tinkerbell - There’s only one Tinkerbell, and she wears a green dress and platinum blonde hair. This costume is best for children who love Peter Pan and don’t want to be anything else.
- Monkey - This is a great gender neutral costume. Little boys and girls can dress as monkeys.
- Spider - This costume can be a full body spider suit, or spiders fastened in the hair with hair clips or a headband.
- Gnome - Gnomes can be versatile costumes because your gnome costume could be a biker gnome, or a french gnome.
- Elmo - What could be more fun than dressing your child as their favorite television monster? Elmo is a 2 year-old red furry creature with big eyes. Doesn’t that sound like your 2-year old? Maybe just a little bit?
- Batman - There are thousands of different kinds of bat-suits available now for every child, in any age bracket.
- Lion - Lions have such great manes, and why not utilize this feature to frame your child’s face for those great 1st halloween pictures?
- Easter bunny - While this is not strictly a Halloween costume, it can double as one if you dressed your infant up as a bunny in the spring and want to reuse the costume.
- Winnie the Pooh - Another classic kids costume, you can always change it up by utilizing different Pooh moments, like the classic Winnie the Pooh song, “I’m just a Little Black Raincloud.”
Dressing a Catchphrase
This year costume party-goers saw a huge increase in clever catch phrase based costumes. If you’re looking to be witty, here are some ideas that just might strike your fancy:
-Cat fight - This phrase can easily be illustrated in costume. Find some torn up leggings, a baggy t-shirt, paint on cuts and scratches and you’re ready to go. For some added fun, glue angry cats onto the back of your t-shirt.
-Daylight Savings - Dress in everyday casual, but with a huge clock around your neck. You can add a big reminder sticker to the clock to help your friends guess.
-Using an abacus, you can let your friends know they can always count on you.
If you’re looking for something less punny, there’s always the classic twist:
-Sure, it’s great to be a redneck for Halloween. But what if you were Cupid, as a redneck. Complete with cammo bow and arrow, cupid ain’t gonna do you wrong, love.
-Instead of dressing up as a person, why not be an entire season? Winter, Spring, Fall, Summer? Just add a couple of sticks, snow, an ice cap, flowers. It’s as changeable as you.

Classic and New Trends in Costumes
While it might be too early to project what will be the biggest Halloween trends of this year, it’s never to late to ask what were some of the top halloween costumes of 2011?
Here’s a quick list that I’ve rounded up, feel free to weigh in on the comments with what you think should have been included.
1. Steampunk - The Victorian elegance mixed with technology continues to delight party goers. I think as long as Tim Burton and hipster culture continue on an upward spiral this will continue to be a trend.
2. Throwback costumes - Think classic games turned into cute 60s era dresses. Yup, you can now dress as Twister. But don’t put your hands on the blue or green dots.
3. Where the Wild Things Are meets sexy with the amount of faux fur lined costumes this past season. If it has ears and a tail than it’s probably puurfect.
4. Vampires in the 21st Century - Sure, everybody loves a Victorian vampire. But modern vampires are much cooler and certainly more versatile.
5. If you grew up in the 80s, were born in the 80s or love the 80s you probably wore some kind of comeback costume last year. Tights, lace, crop tops, bows are all delightfully throw-back items that in vogue.
6. For whatever reason dressing like a Jersey Shore cast member seems to have been incredibly popular. Sure, they parade around like they’re invisible and sexy, but that cheetah print just says, “I’m tacky.”
7. Greek goddesses have seen a rise in popularity again. Maybe it’s because they were known for being seductively dressed with very European manners.
8. Lady Gaga has become a prime target for those who want to wear “avant-garde” clothing like a meat dress or face mask.
9. Blockbuster themes- Costumes that scream, “I’m referencing this awesome thing that everyone knows about” are always a huge hit and 2011 was no different. Maybe this year everyone will reference something so obscure you’ll probably have never heard of it.
10. Black Swan. Yes, that’s right, every woman wanted to be Natalie Portman, but not every woman should have been. I’m not saying it isn’t fun to wear a tulle mini skirt with dark eye makeup, I’m just saying maybe you shouldn’t. This costume takes a bit of class to maintain a beautiful elegance.

Dress Up As Famous Duo With Your Significant Other
Sure, you and your spouse, boyfriend or girlfriend like to dress up for Halloween and New Years, but haven’t you heard? It’s actually quite trendy to dress up with your significant other for a party. Costume parties are in, even if they’re only for birthdays, bachelor/bachelorette parties or holidays, everyone these days can dress up practically any day of the year. If you’re looking for suggestions I keep a few handy just for special occasions. And I like to think every day is a special occasion.
Here’s a list of 15 famous duos who are as simply unforgettable as you:
1. Adam & Eve - You can hardly go wrong dressing up as the first couple. Besides, what’s more suggestive than fig leaves?
2. Aragorn & Arwen - Lord of the Rings fans unite. This is the hottest couple in fantasy fiction to date. And elvish is a beautiful language. Maybe you could surprise everybody at the party by learning a simple phrase.
3. Apollo & Aphrodite - I mean, who wouldn’t want to be a sexy Greek god or goddess?
4. Anthony & Cleopatra - A classic tragic love story makes for the perfect date theme.
5. Bogie & Bacall - One of Hollywood’s most enduring romances, Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall continue to charm audiences by their quick banter and even quicker glances.
6. Bonnie & Clyde - If you love the 1920s this is your pair of aces. Don’t forget to put a fake gun in a violin case.
7. Barbie & Ken - What’s great about dressing up as the most famous doll is that you can rock almost any era. Since Barbie was created she has kept quite the collection of gowns and swimsuits that Ken coordinates with perfectly.
8. Tom Cruise & Nicole Kidman - What’s more fun that dressing up as a divorced famous couple? Sure things didn’t work out in real life, but everyone loved it when they were together.
9. Donald & Daisy Duck - If you’re feeling a little silly, this is an adorable costume. It’s perfect for the long-time couple who just want to be sweet.
10. Jack & Jill - If you learned a few nursery rhymes to recite as a party trick I can only imagine how much fun guests would have quizzing you.
Of course the rest are so famous they don’t really need explanation, but I think you get my drift. My number one rule for adult costumes? You can be sexy, but keep it classy.
11. John Lennon and Yoko
12. Romeo & Juliet
13. Robin Hood & Maid Marian
14. Rhett & Scarlett
15. Lois Lane & Superman

Decade Parties: 80s
One of the current trends in costume parties is decade parties. Everybody dresses up in the fashions of bygone decades to relive their past and maybe poke a little fun at the fashions of yesteryear. I love these kinds of parties just to see how creative people can get and it really brings back memories of good times, great music, and good people.
One of the most popular decades for costume parties is the 80s. It was a time of big hair, leggings, neon, sunglasses, hip hop, punk rock, and accessories, accessories, accessories! So dust off your shoulder pads and break out your headbands, ladies, cause it is party time. Some great 80s ladies costume ideas are:
Punk Rocker. Get a pink wig, fishnet stockings, brightly colored lipstick, flashy nail polish, and some shiny boots.
Flashdance Costume. Try an off the shoulder dress, leggings, and a headband.
Hip Hop Girl. Get some jeans, a graphic tee shirt, and a baseball cap.
The guys out there have some great 80s costume options as well. Try these classics:
Hair Band Member. Get a blond wig, head band, sleeveless tee shirt, animal print pants, a pair of boots, and do not forget the wrist bands.
Rap Star. Try going shirtless with a vest, some parachute pants, sunglasses, and gold, baby, gold. Alternately, you could go with a track suit and baseball cap get up.
Michael Jackson. Need I say more? So many looks to choose from. Get a fedora, some sunglasses, and a flashy glove. Do not forget to practice your moonwalk!
These are just my favorites I have seen at 80s parties I have thrown or been invited to. Dig deep into your memory and think of a crazy outfit you used to wear and have fun recreating it.
